What is Rappie Pie?

Rappie pie — or râpure — is a traditional Acadian dish made from grated potatoes, broth and meat, with no pastry crust, then baked slowly until rich, hearty and deeply comforting.

It has been part of Acadian kitchens in Nova Scotia for generations, served at family meals, gatherings and celebrations across the region.

For those who grew up with it, rappie pie is familiar comfort food. For those discovering it for the first time, it’s an introduction to one of Acadia’s most distinctive food traditions.

Traditionally, It Took a Lot of Work

Making rappie pie from scratch has always been a labour of love.

Potatoes are peeled, grated, then pressed to remove their liquid. Broth and meat are prepared, and the potato mixture is carefully brought back to the right consistency before everything is assembled and baked for hours.

It takes time, patience and plenty of hands-on work — part of what makes the tradition special, but also what can make it difficult to prepare often.

That’s where D’Eon’s comes in.

Making Tradition Easier to Keep

Rappie pie has always been worth the effort — but making it from scratch takes time.

D’Eon’s does much of the hard work ahead of time, so families can still enjoy this traditional Acadian favourite without spending hours grating, pressing, preparing and assembling.

It’s the same idea that has guided us for more than 40 years: make it easier to put rappie pie on the table, without losing the connection to the tradition behind it.

A Taste of Tradition, Any Day of the Week

Rappie pie has a special place in Acadian gatherings and family traditions, but it doesn’t have to be saved for a special occasion.

With D’Eon’s, it can just as easily be supper on a weeknight, a family meal on the weekend, or something you keep in the freezer for when you want a hearty, familiar meal without starting from scratch.

That’s part of what makes rappie pie worth keeping on the table — it’s tradition that still fits everyday life.
